I had pants like those. Wore them as shorts during summer and when it was time to zip them back up, the two sides had different colours.

I use such hiking pants for music festivals. They're sturdy, decently rainproof, have large pockets, and I can attach the legs when it gets chilly in the evening.

i'm wearing a pair right now, these ones are very light and airy so they make amazing jogging trousers since you can adapt them to the temperature
