I believe the default sort type is "Active," iirc, and you can change it in your profile settings (top-left hamburger menu, setting, then your profile settings; it's one of the two drop-down menus)Edit: at least I'm pretty sure that applies to both posts and comments, although I realize now that I haven't actually tested that assumption...
Edit 2: This was wrong! I just tested it and it looks like the comments keep their same order regardless of what the drop down is set to! So actually, I have no idea! Sorry! FWIW it looks like the comments are sorted by recency.

So that drop down controls both posts order and comments order?
I guess that's good enough /shrug
Edit after @realChem@beehaw.org Edit 2: well this is a bummer, I actually had a snicky suspicion that it's by Recency which is the worst of the sorts

Actually that only controls post order. I wish it controlled comment order to as i generally prefer seeing newest first

Yeah I haven't actually checked, I realized, I've just been assuming... Time for a quick experiment methinks!

Comments are sorted by "Hot". Jerboa does not specify a specific sort order it wants, so Lemmy gives it the default, which is Hot.

Hmm... Not saying you're wrong but have a look at https://beehaw.org/post/477824 for example, it definitely seems like sorted By Recency
Edit: actually, it's the same as the Web UI, which clearly says Hot, so I guess the answer is indeed Hot but the Hot algorithm prioritizes recency?

I don't think you can change it right now but I'm sure that'll come in an update someday. Until then I'll probably just stay on the website unfortunately.
