I left the bedroom door open last night, and Charlie waited until six this morning to come in and wake me. That’s not true, is it? I think he came in earlier, maybe mumbling, and my wife woke me. Or maybe he was already in the room, just sitting there, staring at me like he was waiting for a signal. I’d just turned over when she shook me, so who knows—he could’ve been perched there for hours, silently willing me to twitch. He does that when I sleep in the recliner. Just sits and stares until my eyelids flutter, then starts talking in that gravelly nonsense language of his and nudging me like I owe him rent. I’m not sure if it’s eerie or comforting to have a pair of eyes locked on me while I sleep. It's always amusing.
