Adoption & Swap

Last nights dream.

Me and my partner had adopted a little girl, age about 4/5, who'd had a good upbringing but her parents had died or something. It took a few weeks but eventually she and I bonded. I remember our eyes meeting and there was mutual love.

But then without asking, my partner had sent her back to the orphanage, and got a young boy instead who'd had a bad upbringing. My partners reasoning was that "he'd never known love, but the girl had already had that privilege.". I felt sorry for the boy, treated him well, but our personalities didn't match. My kindness towards him was a duty and an effort, not an impulse. I just remember missing the girl, worried about how she was feeling now, and feeling irked at my partner, though I understood their reasoning. I was the stay at home dad while they were at work, so it just felt so unfair. I did feel sorry for the boy though. The thought of asking to swap back again filled me with too much guilt to do.

This reminds me of something I experience when I work with children: many people are so fixated on helping kids with special needs or simply difficult kids that they forget the quiet ones, the normal ones, who know how to follow the rules yet crave attention just as much as the system breaker.
