Wondering if other sources of free streaming VOD movies are acceptable here? There are multiple, legal AFAIK ones, although almost always with geo-restrictions of some kind.
E.g. Could I cross-post this here?
Some example sources:
- Plex
- Tubi
- Fawesome
- Mometu
- TheArchive.tv
- Filmzie
- Flixhouse
- FreeMovies+
- Mercado Play
- iQiyi
Links etc here:

I personally see the focus of this comm more as a place to share movies that were uploaded (illegally?) by normal users to popular legal video streaming platforms, but nobody cares enough about removing it (yet).

I suppose I should have got that from the example in the sidebar :D

I've tried to stay really unclear on the source for the movies we share here, intentionally. My goal though is to keep the community going and not get any Lemmy / Piefed server instance in trouble with any copyright authority. If we can keep doing that, I'm good. The initial model was just as crimeschnecke said: Someone else uploads a movie to YT, we share it here, we watch it. Some of those sites you mentioned, klu9, seem more like they post tons and tons of movies they got from "somewhere" and that could easily be a problem, imo. Open to others' ideas on this, for sure.

If those sites just got movies from "somewhere", they'd get better ones! 😀 Seriously, for every decent film on those sites, there are 50 stinkers. And none of the latest Hollywood blockbusters that usually dominate pirate sites.
And the number of times a movie is geo-restricted (e.g. a film is available on Tubi in the US but not in Mexico) indicates to me they are following legit licensing terms.
Additionally, some are actual subsidiaries of big entertainment companies, e.g. Tubi and Fawesome from Fox.

OK, then those places are totally fine.
