The current icon is exactly the same with boost for reddit. I think it would be nice if boost for lemmy had a (slightly) different icon, like a mirrored version or some changed colors (ex. Green rocket). It would help cause many of us still use the reddit app too. Also it would be easier to understand that this is a different app from the reddit one. :))

Unfortunately that creates a second icon which annoys me :(

What do you mean a second icon?
Also, on Android, you can change Icons for apps to just about whatever you want. I forget how, but I've done it - I just don't bother anymore since I operate by shortcuts.

Fwiw, I have the exact same issue. Personally on a stock pixel 6

It's not an issue, it's the way the app works. You get notified about this if you look close. I just don't like it

I added a second icon, then hid the original from my home screen and all drawer. I only have the one I picked visible anywhere on my device.

Not all launchers support this :(

Does boost for Reddit still work?

If patched, yeah

Using revanced, right? It could also implement a patch for a different icon and name, as is done with youtube etc. Much more likely than current Boost changing icon/name to not be confused with the obsolete Reddit version.
Also if your launcher doesn't support changing icons/names, or hiding apps (so you can hide the original after you create the alternative app icon), you really should look for a different launcher.

Yes, revanced. I personally think it makes more sense for the lemmy app to do it, so it would differentiate from the old one.
I know I could use a different language but my tablet is really old and I think it would stress it
