What a terrible list...

I am sorry but this list is... not-good. Includes problematic ROMs (Copperhead OS), dead projects (AOKP), and OEM closed-source ROMs (MIUI)

To anyone out there, my personal recommendation would be: if you own a Google Pixel, go for GrapheneOS or CalyxOS, if you do not have a Pixel phone, try LineageOS and derivates (I am personally running crDroid with microG instead of gapps)

I would also recommend DivestOS, soft fork of LineageOS that aims to increase security & privacy and can be installed on a lot of older devices.

Not bad, in my head it was included when i mentioned "LOS derivates". but yeah. def a good choice.

The AOKP website thats linked doesn't seem to have been updated in 3 years and the latest builds there are A9. Not exactly great for security...

You need a license that incurs a monthly fee for CopperheadOS. Theres no source code and their audit section is just a long way of saying nothing that eventually links to a 404'd github page... It seems very TrustMeBro

LineageOS for microG unofficial fork with built-in microG gapps implementation & full Google Play Services compatibility

It's open source

timkenhan@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 3y

So is ArchLinux, but it's not on this list.

Why? Because it's not relevant to the list.

For what its worth, I use GrapheneOS. Aside from some small issues with banking apps and a few odd quirks, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

MajorHavoc@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3y

Yeah. Graphene is fantastic. I had forgotten how blazing fast interface and long battery life felt like before I switched.

pandarisu@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

I'm currently on Lineage on a Pixel 7, I'm tempted to give Graphene a go though.

As I had issues with one banking app on Lineage, I expect I'll have problems with that one and possibly more if I make the change

rms1990@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3y

A lot more apps are becoming reliant on google stuff.

Melpomene@kbin.social · 1 pts · 3y

Yeah, the issue with banking isn't the OS / ROM per se but Google's trust model. I'd have to dig up the specifics but basically banks are hit and miss with any degoogled solution.

jacktherippah@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 3y

Yeah, I've just flashed it yesterday. It's amazing. You can keep most Pixel smarts while yeeting all the ad and tracking stuff. All my apps are working perfectly too unlike microG.
