Note that by 30 years ago, they are talking about the Tim Burton adaptation from 1996, which was 10-15 years ago, and not the 1966 trading cards, which where in fact about 30-50 years ago.

IIRC the game is based on the Mars Attacks trading card, not the Mars Attacks! movie. The movie is also based on the original trading cards, but the game devs could not buy the rights to the movie.

So this article is a bit misleading, I guess it will be updated when someone from Warner Bros notices it.

Those cards gave me nightmares, but the movie was hilarious. The intervening years were a definitely a factor, though.
