I can recommend the 2D side-scroller Project:Starfighter, which is a fun and challenging play-through.

I've been thinking of starting a new game recently and just staying out of politics and the main plotline as much as the game will let me, at least until I want to unlock more ships. I enjoy it a lot, but the main plot has always felt a bit on-rails for how open ended the gameplay is.
