I'm new to CoMaps, been using Organic Maps for a while. What's so special about CoMaps?

Do you want the short answer, or a longer history?

But basically, Organic:

  • Is governed by a for-profit company
  • Lacks transparency
  • Added affiliate links to locations on the map

And since the fork, CoMaps have been moving swiftly in adding features as seen here. I don't know what's been happening to Organic, as I've stopped following them.

Thank you.

CoMaps was founded in 2025 by former Organic Maps contributors. The Organic Maps codebase was forked due to concerns about the project's governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community. The CoMaps project was created, focusing on privacy, performance and community.

Shift to non profit is wild. I don't always agree with a change out of pure governance, but in this case it was affecting the software, so I think of it as a good move.

Also the logo fucking SUUUUCKED.
