What was the deal with this mf? I just started NG and audibly groaned at the sight of him again. I think I killed him when I went down to new Londo ruins for the first time? But I can't remember what aggroed him...
He's chill at first because he thinks nobody can actually fulfill the undead prophecy, so he doesn't worry about it and just hangs out. Then you ring the bells and prove him wrong so he goes out to try to make something of himself as well, but when he gets to New Londo Ruins he can't progress, loses his mind and goes hollow from lack of purpose. That's all mostly implied, in true Souls fashion they never state it outright, but that's what I believe is going on with him.
Maybe he is. Or maybe he's a sad guy who was finally given the motivation to try his hardest, and then crashed out and lost his mind when his best wasn't good enough.
He was in the mindset that it's not that he's trash, it's just impossible. Then you prove that it is possible actually so he's like fuck, I gotta try too. However he goes down to New Londo with jack shit gear and gets his ass handed to him, so he's like fuck, I'm actually trash. He loses his purpose, gets depressed and becomes hollow inside (which is a metaphor for depression or maybe suicide).

Yeah that's the point, going hollow is the point of no return. For me that's basically soul suicide since you can't actually suicide in that game.
