Absolum, from the publisher of Streets of Rage 4, is a brawler that lets you cash-out a combo - and it's brilliant

I saw this and was hopeful, so I bought it. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for Streets of Rage, but I found the combat to be kind of clunky, and I only played probably 8 hours before dropping it.

I'm surprised at this, I find the combat to be extremely tight and pretty deep with the combo system and various defensive mechanics. It plays like a fighting game.

Well I'm terrible at fighting games, so that tracks. Picked up Astral Ascent, which wasn't quite scratching the itch, and then moved to Dead Cells which seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

Edit: Part of what I found clunky might have been the 2.5D movement. I'm more comfortable in 2D or a full isometric view like Hades.

Yeah. I've only played an hour or so, but I believe it uses the same engine as Streets of Rage 4. So it's pretty similar combat wise

You should stick with it. Once you get some metaprogression it really takes off.
