They didn't think it would apply to them.
It's like how many minorities vote conservative. They feel like they made it, so they feel they'll have less competition if they support bigotry against other minorities. The rich and powerful are turning the poors against each other without fearing repercussions for their actions because not enough people will hold them accountable.

Let's say a muslim student complains about Saudi prince MBS being a butcher. Could the KSA government have the U.S. track him and arrange a chop talk? Seems like an area for abuse.
