Oh hey a cultist, anti-unionist, who's also a rapist. What a surprise.
miked@piefed.social · 16 pts · 256d
Out of the loop here. He is a cultist and anti-union?
velindora@lemmy.cafe · 14 pts · 256d
He has had some trouble with SAG in the past, I dunno about the cult thing. He’s not a Scientologist.
AstaKask@lemmy.cafe · 4 pts · 256d
He's part of the Christian sect of the sick and demented Yahweh cult that's been terrorising the world for well over a thousand years.
velindora@lemmy.cafe · 12 pts · 255d
Oh that cult… I mean, just call him a religious freak and it won’t confuse people.

Tip of the day:
If the founder is still alive, it's a sect
If the founder is dead, it's a religion
Both suck, and followers of either are dumb
AstaKask@lemmy.cafe · 1 pts · 254d
I always thought of this way:
If a group start worshipping a specific god from the pantheon of an established religion exclusively, they're a cult (in this case the cult of Yahweh, the old ass storm god), when the cult eventually splinters, they're sects (Christianity, Islam, Judaism etc.). Don't think the status of founders has anything to do with it.
Ach@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 254d
That's incorrect though. Catholics, Protestants, Methodists, etc are sects of Christianity, the broader body of the religion. Judaism and Islam are their own religions (albeit Abrahamic in origin), with Sunni/Shia being sects of Islam for example.
AstaKask@lemmy.cafe · 1 pts · 254d
I mean Scientology also calls itself a religion. What makes Judaism, Islam and Christianity their own religions? They all worshlp the same old god, and all absorbed local culture wherever these disgusting people spread to build their myths.

The guy that commissions giant RC airplanes and flies them around on YouTube at his mansion in Georgia? That Tyler Perry?
cmbabul@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 255d
Anyone that tries as hard as him to have a squeaky clean family friendly image is sus to me. Bill Cosby is another great example.

The fuck, seriously?
LodeMike@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 256d
Not to be that nongendered person but 77 million for sexual assault? It's it 90% punitive damages?
idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 256d
If they’re an actor who can no longer act as a result of trauma, it could be partly lost wages.
FatVegan@leminal.space · -11 pts · 256d
It's completely normal to give people millions of dollars to play pretend
HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 256d
It's just as normal that a sexual assault denialist shows up to browbeat victims because they got a few bucks in court.
NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 256d
It's standard practice for lawsuits to initially ask for a lot in the hopes that the defendant settles for a fraction of the initial lawsuit... then the lawyers will take a big chunk after that.
errer@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 256d
I don’t understand why this isn’t in criminal court. It does feel like a cash grab.
Also innocent until proven guilty guys…I’m not a fan of his movies and maybe he’s had some union issues before but that doesn’t automatically make him a sexual deviant.
MirthfulAlembic@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 256d
The state could separately bring criminal charges. Also, the standard in civil court is preponderance of evidence (more likely than not) rather than beyond a reasonable doubt. It's much easier to meet that in civil court, especially for sexual assault.
Sharkticon@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 255d
Plus a high profile civil case is more likely to get in the news and actually Kickstart criminal investigations.
