And sometimes "Y".

It’s so weird when people get weird about “y” being a vowel or not when any time it makes the “e” or “I”sound it is a vowel. (Any, try, anything ending in -y or -ly)

A vowel isn’t a vowel because it is aeiou, it is because it makes a vowel sound.

Change my mind: R is a vowel.

  • sugar
  • water
  • stir
  • motor
  • femur

The end of these words are all pronounced the same, despite having different vowels placed before the R. The vowels are essentially silent, and R is doing all the heavy lifting.

Y is a vowel on weekends.

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 235d (1 reply)

"Weekends" does not have a Y in it.

Y is a vowel every day.

Pray tell, what sound does the "y" make?

Yeah, R is really the vowel here, not Y.

belastend@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 223d

not quite ^^ y is always the vowel here, but depending on your accent the R is either silent or coloring the y-vowel.
