How do you get them to grow on the rock? I would love to do this, but mine only seem to like sphagnum peat moss

Long fiber sphagnum moss wicking water up from the substrate, mostly. I’ve heard that lava rock can be porous enough to stay moist on its own but it doesn’t work for me in my dry climate.
