I'd say broom closets could replace them, but I think part of the appeal were the transparent walls that let others see the goofiness you were up to.

Personally I think we should bring back phone booths, if only to have a good area to talk to someone semi-privately. Also for this trend to get band like planking.

My office has a couple of free standing booths with a small shelf to put your laptop on. The office gets a bit loud from time to time, so they're nice if you want to take a teams call in peace. I always thought it would be cool if they were in public spaces.
