[Discussion] A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - S01E01 - The Hedge Knight

I'm guessing some folks are show only watchers, so book readers should hide future spoilers when appropriate.

I have not had a chance to watch the episode yet! I’ll have my breakdown ASAP!

Great first episode! For me the "graphicness" of the GoT theme switcheroo joke didn't land, but THIS was a great first introduction to our heroes. I felt that they were really faithful to the Novella and expanded in the best way possible.

This would totally be a series that I would devour if they dropped the entire thing in one seating a-la Netflix, even more than HoTD.

Observations

  • Lyonel Baratheon kicked so much ass. I think this show will excel in augmenting the supporting characters.
  • Having Dunk talk to the horses is a great way to translate his inner monologue from the written medium into the visual medium of the series.
  • I didn't know I would appreciate The Antlered DRunk and The Laughin' Storm together.

Spoiler Zone

::: spoiler spoiler I like how they're hinting at the ambiguity of Dunk not being knighted. It is not spelled right away. :::

::: spoiler spoiler I am also glad that there's breadcrumbs about the fan theories from this era sprinkled thru the episode.
:::

::: spoiler spoiler I am wondering how are they going to handle The Storm King's Rebellion during Aegon's reign if Daniel Ings is in his 40s :::

Most of the reviews of the show I've seen are from people who DID get all the episodes in advance. One thing they've mentioned and I expect to hold true is that 30min once a week might be a little slow. Luckily the stakes are overall so much lower that it hopefully won't be so bad.

(But I completely agree.)

::: spoiler Lyonel Baratheon spoilers

I had only been thinking of Dunk and Egg novella spoilers, I completely forgot about "The World of Ice & Fire" spoilers.

I have to imagine one of the 12 stories George has notes on involves more of that story.

With the stuff they've already added that's a much more interesting future story now.

That was a great start to a series and to the story. I'm guessing it will be a divisive choice but cutting to Dunk taking a shit mid GoT theme was a brilliant choice. Made it clear from the start what the tone of the show is.

Also the master of games was great, I don't know if we'll see much of that character again but he really owned the scene.

::: spoiler Future Egg spoilers I thought the first episode would end with the Egg reveal. I figured that might be their big "Ah ha" moment that got people talking. I like the choice to end where it did, just letting Dunk and Egg be Knight and Squire and nothing more for the evening. :::

::: spoiler Future Dunk spoilers I like how they're handling Dunk not being knighted. Just Dunk saying something, cut to when that thing happened, but curiously not actually saying it happened. :::

That's a good point about that scene. When it happened my reaction was "and why was that needed?!" But I can see your point. It was a strong counterpoint between the idealized gallantry of the nobility and the harsh, unpleasant nature of every day life for those further down the totem pole.

I interpreted it as commentary to the viewers, that they consider the GoT show to be bad.
