If you poison the food it’ll kill them. It’s why you do that quest with the gravedigger. To show what’s possible.

Also, wolves will generally leave if you also turn around and leave. Dogs, different thing.

You need to immediately turn and burn though or you can get them chewing your butt. I was doing the Brunswick quest on a new playthrough the other day and the big group of wolves at the second spot almost got my ragged early game Henry.
Usually i just jump over the rocks, grab the gear, and run. This time they didn’t like my running away.
