I'd actively advise against watching the original 80s cartoon unless you have some serious nostalgia for it. Those cartoons didn't age very well and other than sharing a similar basis and cast they have very different stories

I went into the new series blind and still haven't watched any other related media. It's far more gay and well written than a reboot of a show created to sell toys has any right to be. The fact that it got finished relatively intact is an accomplishment.

The 2018 series is not really a continuation at all, more a whole new story with the same characters. The 80's show can be fun (and I would recommend checking it out after watching the 2018 one) but imo the 2018 series is head and shoulders above the original.
