Mike Reiss said on one dive he took in OceanGate's Titan submersible, they returned to the surface as soon as they lost communication.

What possessed this man to get in there a second time, let alone three more?!

More money than common sense

The more I hear about how these people operate, the more my internal screaming intensifies. Yeah, the ocean is inherently dangerous. That’s a reason to take all possible precautions, not a reason to pretend there’s no point in taking any. Sheesh.

At first I thought "Why not connect the sub using a cable to a ship on the surface for communication?" Then I thought "Oh wait, it's 2.5 miles down, no ship could carry that much cable." Then I read about an unmanned sub on the ship L'Atalante: It has grappling arms that could have retrieved the Titan (had it been intact), and it's connected to the mother ship by FIVE MILES of cable.

Weird hearing Mike Reiss's name without it being tied to The Simpsons.
