It seems dumb, but the band could potentially create a seasoning brand. I'd say in this case it's warranted.
.... But then again the name is “Spyce Girlz Seasonings.” which obviously has nothing to do with the band and it IS a stupid lawsuit.

Why do Canadian’s even need to listen to them? The Spice Girls are based in the UK. I know nothing of the laws around this.

Well, fact one that you should consider would be that they share heads of state, so, probably not completely unrelated diplomatically.
Fact two would be that a lot of trade marks and patents have international recognition and treaties protecting them in general. That's... Very obvious.
