Isn't Mickey Mouse now in the public domain? Because I've got an idea for a show... π

The first version of Mickey (i.e. from Steamboat Willie) is public domain, the later colour ones are not (yet).

Yep. I wonder if Disney adding Steamboat Willie to their opening logos was/is meant to fight this.

If it's true that Disney did that strategically, it would mean they'd be attempting to prevent people from using it on the grounds of trademark law, rather than copyright law.
Either that, or it would be a gambit to get stuff flagged and removed by automated systems illegitimately.

It was used as a way to extend the image to the full amount before reaching public domain. There's some stipulations where items can reach public domain before 100 years, but 100 years is the maximum time allowed. If I recall correctly, they even tried to get public domain removed for this image but it was shot down.

Mickey is trademarked. The film is public domain.

@NickEast_IndieWriter Perhaps there can be the "Mickey Mouse Murder Club"? @outdoor @nature@fedigroups.social @photography@fedigroups.social @photography@lemmy.world @Nature@lemmy.world @hiking@lemmy.world @hiking@fedigroups.social @joinin

Does anyone know where that place is? Even if just broadly.

@Vinylraupe It says pretty specifically in the post, I could tell you exactly but I choose not to π
