Tagging some folks who've commented here in the last few months. Get some hype for this basho!

Hoshoryu's hips don't lie

DV8@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 161d

Given that I slept awfully and decided to just wake up early anyway to watch the F1 GP and the sunday morning sumo, I was not fully awake enough to have an actual relevant or coherent opinion unfortunately. Still, it was great to know that we're back again for two weeks of sumo!

I'm definitely rooting hard for Aonishiki to make Yokuzuna, even if I think that he'll need luck to make that, which maybe means he doesn't fully deserve it. (I think that if he wins, he'll again win with a 12-3 and win the deciders) In that respect he's already lucky that Onosato lost his first match and some of the other people that can realistically beat him, already have a loss on day 1.

Hoshoryu won, but he's still not looking like he's a 100%. Kotozakura is looking very strong though, I honestly kind of dismissed him from my own list of contenders to win, but he looked great.

It was great to see Ura use some classic simple sumo to get a win for once. I hope he can get a real good record after the negative score he had last time that didn't really reflect how close some of those matches were.

Thanks for the mention. I said I'd like to learn more about it because I knew near nothing so I guess now is the time!

So 15 days of tournaments, start and end on Sunday (Saturday for me because I'm 14 hours behind Japan time). So they start here 6:30, 12:30, 1:45, 2:00am it appears).

Bouts (if you call them that?)

Participation by Division

Division Number of Participants Matches per Tournament
Makuuchi (Top) Fixed at 42 15
Jūryō (Second) Fixed at 28 15
Makushita 120 7
Sandanme ~160 7
Jonidan ~200–250 (Variable) 7
Jonokuchi ~40–90 (Variable) 7

Now I just need to catch some matches tonight and start to figure out the rules/moves, and what to really watch out for!

Fam, check out DonDon's "top ten" videos: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos He posts them a couple hours after Makuuchi's done for the day (i.e. I watch them first thing in the morning), and includes a replay with an analysis of the moves made.

Will do thanks!

Kirishima had a nice answer to Fujinokawa's throw from against the bales. Then Kotozakura played his positioning well against Yoshinofuji, but it was a strong showing against the ozeki. Yoshino's been doing better than Fujino but they both broke into the top ranks at the same time in July last year and it's been nice watching their wrestling.

Sergio@piefed.social · 3 pts · 161d (2 replies)

Fujinokawa can lose a match, but he's never "defeated", he gives it 100% every time. Yeah I think Yoshinofuji's slightly better in general, tho this wasn't his best match.

Takayasu showing he still got stamina. Shame about Onosato he really oughta take an extended break. I hope Hakunofuji's foot is allright.

Every time I see Shishi in Dondon's top 10 I'm like: is it bc he does something unexpected, or because someone makes him look clownish? In this case it's bc he shows a mix of manuverability (at the beginning side-step after receiving the tachiai; as well as that odd shoulder block) and use of his physique (at the end when he's like fakit I'll just fall on you.) In the past he's had problems getting past mid-Maegashira, it'll be interesting to see if his skill has grown enough to get him past M11 (or even just to keep him there.)

Nice straightforward win from Ura. Aonishiki gets his grip and wins. Hoshoryu seems to be in good shape.

Tonight: Aonishiki vs Yoshinofuji, and Fujinokawa vs Takayasu!

Every time I see Shishi in Dondon’s top 10 I’m like: is it bc he does something unexpected, or because someone makes him look clownish?

Feels like when he first came up he had a newcomer's gimmick of slightly different sumo that threw his opponents for a loop, but it was pretty quickly apparently that he didn't have much depth to back it up. Seems like Oosunaarashi was a similar case. Shishi's young, so we'll see if he develops any further skills to progress.

Sergio@piefed.social · 2 pts · 161d

Let's see, last basho I said something like:

my hypothesis is that Shishi’s big and strong and that’s what he bases his style on. He’s like the opposite of Ura. (ofc Ura is strong, but you know what I mean…) I think that’s what’s why Shishi was in so much trouble when he hurt his leg: he has no plan B. His only plan is to go there and be big and strong, and of course he’s practiced all his techniques diligently. And that’s got him to the top league which is pretty impressive, but the best wrestlers in Makuuchi have a little “something else” (imaginativeness, agility, ability to think two steps ahead?) which is why Shishi plateaus mid-maegashira.

I still think that's true.

I'm going to comment this sperate to ask about rules/prefrences. As I learn/watch/view what do you guys consider the difference between conversation, hype, and spoilers. If I posted wins/losses or such, should there be a time period before so to make sure it does not spoil anyones viewing experience, should it be immediate for commentary and excitement or should I avoid until post tournament to ensure someone who recorded or watches them in another available format doesn't get a moment ruined by seeing a comment?

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 160d (1 reply)

I don't really care about spoilers but I know sometimes people do. I think if you keep results within the daily discussion thread it should be fine, so that way they don't just pop up on people's feed.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 160d

Sounds good, I just wanted to find what the line between Hype and To much info was

zabadoh@ani.social · 3 pts · 160d (2 replies)

How strong is Hoshoryu's back to avoid a loss being pushed down like that, and coming back to win!

Nice starts to Kirishima's ozeki run and of course Aonishiki's yoko run.

Such a shame about Midorifuji's cardiac problem. Hopefully he can get it under control and come back. Sumo needs little guys!

Sergio@piefed.social · 3 pts · 160d

Such a shame about Midorifuji’s cardiac problem.

OMG I didn't know that... I hope he's OK? Yeah, he's usually interesting to watch.

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 160d

Hoshoryu's recovery on that was insane. That would've put most people on the clay for sure.

I couldn't believe about Midorifuji! I wonder if heart problems run in his family.
