Explanation: The English nation (and it's name) is derived from a group of Germanic tribes known as the Anglo-Saxons, who migrated into Britannia and displaced the natives. For this reason, they are sometimes known, in poetic or rhetoric terms, as "Anglos" or "Saxons".

Ireland spent a good deal of time under English rule, and was not happy about it; as such, they used 'Saxon' pretty freely in the 19th century in anti-English invective.

... but ORIGINAL Saxons still existed for most of the 19th century as an independent state! The Kingdom of Saxony, in Germany!
