In the Microsoft Office certification software that my school uses, in the skill review mode, when I try to highlight something by double clicking the text, it makes the text larger.

It also happens on single click (possibly to make changing the text size easy), and you can also highlight by dragging and it'll work, but I still like to double click to highlight.

Seems like it was designed for touch screens with no regard for people using a mouse.

more like "we forgot to add text size options and we need to release it in 2 days" and the interim dev just slapped together a solution.

Mouse users have the luxury of dragging and selecting the texts without much effort so I don't think it's that much of an issue

I often do the double click and drag to select by word like OP does, but double tapping a touch screen is a common gesture to zoom in. I would be annoyed too.

Double tap to select a word is a thing on mobile too, works in most input fields, it annoyed me it didn't work in jerboa app though, I use it definitely more than I'd use double tap to zoom

Time to get certified in office only using a keyboard

An unironically Vi(m)/Emacs moment.

I didn't even knew that was a thing. Thanks for the tip.
