I've had good results with an app called "Transit." The logo looks like a white, backwards letter N on a green background.
Tells you the ETA of buses and subways on your area.
Free to get and use.

I used it to, but the problem is that the app uses some google dependency for creating paths on the map, which doesn't work on my phone.
I really liked the old 3.X.X app because it was one of the few comprehensive options for trip planning for me that didn't need Google.

I enjoyed the 'Roadify' app and then they said I had to give them my information to keep using it.
The MTA is run by a bunch of people who never use mass transit. I can text the bus stop identifier to the MTA for a estimated wait time. Except a lot of bus stops don't display the identifier number.
And don't get me started on the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry is run by the Dept. of Transportation, which for some reason refuses to coordinate with the MTA buses.
