John Green's "Everything is Tuberculosis" was a fascinating read that goes into the history of tuberculosis.

Very surprising to see an outbreak there.

We don’t vaccinate against it in the US because it’s so rare here. We rely on early detection and treatment.

There is not really an effective vaccine, except for some help with infant dissemination in infants. We controlled TB through public health measures and antibiotics. Multi-drug resistant TB is and likely will become a big problem. Source: 13 years in TB vaccine research.

BCG is still the most administered vaccine in the world, though mostly ineffective (as stated before). 100th+ million doses a year. Tb kills more than any infectious disease. Surpassed malaria around 2010?

mRNA is a great new option for delivering a specific antigen. Doesn't help if you don't know what will work for long term immunity.

TB is effectively cured, however it still kills more than any other disease. It requires months of antibiotics and interrupting the treatment can result in resistant strains showing up.
