It's a good thing there wasn't a fever dream remake 30 years later, nor a prequel nobody asked for concerning Wonka's origins.That would just be silly.

I dunno if I'd call it depressing. I find it to be uplifting. It's a mother's love, and that can be a powerful insulator against the ugliness of life. He has a great mom that loves him and is doing her best. The song shows that.

A more realistic interpretation, undoubtedly. My biggest criticism is how it disrupts the pacing of the film. It's an act break, but a weak transition.
