2nd day of work on my upcoming album "Murky Mind"
Before you read my lengthy tale below, here's a neat little bit of mandolin to make it worth your while: https://youtu.be/5LYXOSKSjzw?is=9lVYXV3rBes-7fXI
Today was all about practice: I got started with some... panflute! I've had one lying around the house for a few years now and figured I'd use it to prepare myself for (hopefully) later this year when I'll get started on clarinet and flute, something I've been meaning to do since I first heard Mychael Danna's score for Girl Interrupted, over a decade ago.
I followed that up with a quick session on my (yep) father's 50-year old mandolin, which has been performing surprisingly well for its age. Mandolin may feature on a couple of songs on the album and all this practice I've been doing will help me make an informed choice for a new mandolin of my own.
After that I decided to work up the courage to resume vocal practice. Folks... half of this album I have never heard myself. I wrote the vocals in an apartment, as quietly as humanly possible, whispering into the microphone. Some of these I've had for years and now I finally get to hear them out loud. I'm relieved to say that so far I've been able to sing all of them, some with much more ease than I expected. None require any key changes or time-consuming rewrites. All they require is... [checks notes] several months of practice, to ensure my tone and pitch are reliable enough to record. Coooool... cool cool cool...
It's a bit early for me to show parts from the actual songs, but I'd like to reveal the titles of the three songs I tested today: Milk Fang, Mad House and If You Leave I'm All Alone Here
Getting more and more excited to share these every day. I'm really glad I'm doing these updates, and if you're among the few people reading them, thank you!
I'll be trying to keep them brief. See you tomorrow!
