I'm slowly considering giving FreeBSD a try. What makes me hesitate is that I'm not a geek, just a mere desktop user of my computer (running GNU/Linux Mint, mostly because as a user I can appreciate what the GNU philosophy/license is giving me). But I'm nearing my 60s too and, I don't know, maybe I would be embarking on too hard of journey for mere me? ;)
What's sure is that as a potential user I can fully appreciate the enthusiasm and how highly regarded is that welcoming FreeBSD community, as well as the quality of the handbook (I started reading it not long ago, it's really well made).
Perhaps give https://midnightbsd.org/ a try. I haven't personally used it, but as I understand it's desktop oriented and may be a good way to ease in (so to speak).
