Oh hello! This looks gnarly! 20th Century Studios has debuted an official trailer for a surprise sci-fi thriller titled No One Will Save You, which will (unfortunately) be skipping theaters and debuting directly for streaming on Hulu (and Disney+ worldwide) later this month. Why not theaters?! It's going to be this year's Prey, I think. The latest from writer / director Brian Duffield, who last made the underrated Spontaneous horror comedy just a few years ago. Starring Kaitlyn Dever, "the sci-fi psychological thriller plunges an anxiety-ridden homebody into a nonstop nightmare when aliens invade her home." Duffield tells B-D in an interview that, "the movie, especially for a movie of this budget size, is floor-to-ceiling with aliens." Adding that "it is aggressive and tense… it's a pretty lean and mean" 90 minute sci-fi thriller movie. Yeah I'm up for this! Let's see what he has been cooking up.

Theatrical runs mean the overall budget has to be basically doubled. Disney owns the studio and Hulu so there’s next to no unfavorable distribution overhead here. I don’t like this system but it seems like a clever way to get mid budget movies out there without a lot of additional risk. Instead of having to worry about it performing well over 1 or 2 weekends at the box office, it can organically attract viewers over a longer period of time and still be considered a success from an accounting perspective. Prey was awesome but I doubt it would have performed as well in theaters as it did on streaming. Prey would have to have made in excess of 130 million just to turn a profit.

This looks like a great little fun movie. Great timing for the start of horror season.
