Executed for a kg of weed. A plant that you can grow well over a kg legally in most counties for personal use.

They cite that 'up to 144 people could have used this weed to get high for a week' as cause for taking the man's life. Oh no, 144 people with the munchies, using a drug less dangerous than beer.

Sorry Omar, Singapore is still a conservative, draconian mess. Rip.

Singapore likes to keep a very tight leash on people's liberties. It's amazing what freedoms people would give up in return for stable living conditions and clean streets.

And Singaporeans will defend it. They've been brainwashed to believe some weed will be the end of their civilization.

This is the answer to the insanity people are looking for.

Singapore has convinced their population that "one bad apple ruins the bunch". To the level of insanity where they just executed a guy for having weed.

And low tax rates.

William Gibson (author of Neuromancer among other things, not all of them good) published an article about Singapore 30 years ago. It's titled Disneyland with the Death Penalty: https://librarianedge.pbworks.com/f/William+Gibson+article+on+Singapore+1993+--+Disneyland+with+the+Death+Penalty.pdf

33 years later and much of this is still very relevant. It has dated somewhat, but accurately reflects what I experienced in Singapore during work travel over the past few years.

At the least, if you're interested in what dystopian science fiction writers think about Singapore it certainly dropped some puzzles pieces into place for me.

Executed for not causing mass health problems or even deaths, but for just creating a possibility of that some people will do some shit while being high. WTF?

Fun fact: German customs doesn't report the recipients of packages containing drugs if they reside within a country with such barbaric practices.
