While corporal punishment has been banned in some US states, it is still legal almost 20 of them, mostly in the South and Midwest. I'm not saying child abuse is good, just that it was routine for many Americans, which provides some ideological context for ICE's brutal treatment of kids.
The departments that are refusing to comply—like those led by Sheriff Rochelle Bilal of Philadelphia; Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling; Police Chief Mark Bruley of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; and Sheriff Danny Ceisler of Bucks County, Pennsylvania—are demonstrating that their first duty is to serve their communities and follow the Constitution. Still, others embrace the significant financial incentives the federal government is offering local law-enforcement agencies.
Which direction are we moving? Towards more or less child abuse?
