Do actors take it as a compliment when someone tells them they absolutely hated them as a villain?

People generally like it when you tell them they did a good job.

Depends on the actor.

I personally do when I play villains on stage. I played Bill Sykes in Oliver many moons ago and, as much as I detested the character, people hated me so I took it as a job well done.
