With Reform UK having made gains in England in council elections, the SNP leader added: “The results across the UK made clear why the need for independence is so urgent.

“Nigel Farage is now galloping towards Downing Street and the prospect of a Reform-led government is more likely than not.”

That, he said, gave rise to the prospect of the UK having a “prime minister who is openly hostile to minority groups, who has called for the privatisation of the NHS and the abolition of the Scottish Parliament”.

The First Minister added: “It is vital we unite in Scotland to ensure our Parliament is fully Farage-proofed.

Are they any chances of that actually succeeding? (I'm genuinely curious.)

Starmer has repeatedly said no to this already. Swinney ran on a majority means No10 can't refuse ticket. He didn't get the majority and Starmer will continue to ignore. As in Wales and NI too, who also have independence parties leading their assemblies

The Edinburgh Agreement happened in 2012 with a pro- independence majority of 71 and Conservatives in charge of Westminster.

Now we've got a pro- independence majority of 73 and Labour in charge of Westminster.

I think the chances are high. There's precedent, a stronger majority, and a Westminster party in charge which should be more pro- democracy and self determination.

It's still great how in a "voluntary" union any country that wants to even ask their people if they should leave has to ask permission.
