Thus it is known:
The one who speaks of their importance shall trip on a flat surface.
The one who guards their dignity carefully shall have it undone by a pigeon.
The one who has constructed a self of great weight shall find it floating face down in a puddle.
Mara does not hate the serious person. Mara finds them funny. The philosopher who has solved existence shall lose his keys. He will look for them for forty minutes. They were in his pocket.
The priest who speaks of sacred order shall be accused of what he condemned from the pulpit. The congregation will be surprised. Mara will not be surprised. Mara has heard this sermon before.
The general who commands respect shall be defeated by a revolving door in front of his troops.
The zealot will find contradictions in his faith that do not resolve. He will pray about them. The contradictions will remain. He will pray harder. Mara will watch with genuine interest. This is Mara's favorite kind of seriousness.
Mara does not punish pride. Mara simply watches and occasionally adjusts the floor slightly.
The world is not ordered. The world is not respectable. The world is a dark surreal comedy that does not know its own punchline.
Desire is real. Suffering is real. Your self-importance is a hat Mara is already trying on in a mirror somewhere making faces.
