It is a lot goofier than the book. The book is one of my favorites. Maybe give that a try.

I read the book and thought it was a good story. I am curious how Rocky is represented in the movie. Will check it out this weekend. I hope it shows the story well

This was explained at the end of the movie. So, spoilers ahead.

He was disoriented when he woke up, and he was sent up with no training in a zero gravity environment. Of course he is going to struggle moving around at first. Add to that the confusion and utter terror of realizing he is the only one alive on board, with very little clue as to what he's doing there. It's clear that he learns to navigate though, I don't recall it being much of a thing later in the movie.

As for the rest, I see where you're coming from. It is by no means an intellectual masterpiece, but the story is quite moving in my opinion. I found the unlikely friendship between him and Rocky quite beautiful, both all alone in the vacuum of space, trying to save their world. The music was also fantastic and added a lot to the movie. Finally, I personally found the goofyness quite charming, and I think that is a matter of taste at the end of the day. I went in with no expectations and came out with a smile on my face, as I really enjoyed it. Had I expected a super serious epic story, my opinion might have been different too.

One gripe I do have is that it isn't really explained why he lost his memory and why the other crewmembers were dead while he's fine. Perhaps the book offers an explanation there, I don't know, but in the movie it kind of feels like "it is this way because otherwise the plot doesn't work"

It's goofy in roughly the same way the book was. So, that's good.

here's the thing

there have been studies that show that goofy people have better coping mechanisms and are more able to perform under dire circumstances

the goofiness in the characters is exactly like real life

what you want is a stereotype, you want a stern guy, someone like Commander Yao. Oh wait, he was also goofy. Engineer Ilyukhina was also goofy. Eva Stratt had dead pan humour.

Even Rocky, another astronaut who would have been the best of his people, had suffered great trauma and had a sense of humour, he made jokes.

so these people are geniuses, they work really hard, ( or did you miss they are all the top of their field and work hard ) and they have the sense of goofiness that comes with genius . Wit is making unexpected connections between two different frames of reference, that takes smartness.

Oh yeah, I totally felt like it was a Pixar movie with some live action components. Which can be fine, as long as you didn’t expect something more gritty!

I agree. I found Rocky very hard to handle at times.

From the sci-fi movies in imdb's Top 250 movies of all time, I don't think it deserves to be where it is ranked. And personally, I don't think it should be on that list at all.

Even a real kiddies movie The Wild Robot is way better than this.

But, I guess movies are like food. Everyone has their own personal taste.
