That doesn't seem to be pointed out / parodied as much as it could have in various media, but I enjoyed how they handled that in Blackadder season 1 I think it was. I.e., digging up some random grave and then aging the finger bones and whatnot to claim them as some saint from the past.

Relics were always a favorite - every damn religious site in Europe seemed to have a relic of SOME obscure saint or another.
... and a concerning number claiming to have Christ's foreskin.

Typically you would do your business in a chamber pot, and then empty it either in a pit outdoors, or into the local river.
