Yeah I can't imagine how you could even do it without some sort of specialized equipment.

If there were any truth to it I would bet he was somehow using old off rim tires as some sort of makeshift container, and just spilled gas everywhere before something ignited it.

i know that in the olden days people soaked tyres in petrol to supposedly make them softer - for racing. maybe this is what he was actually doing?

But the air pressure would make it nigh impossible to get the gas into the tires. Unless he deflated them significantly, first.

That's what I am picturing. If I was gonna gas up my tires I would remove the valve core to get rid of all that pesky air, then use a funnel to fill them up.
