Even if I were told the lever does nothing, I'd pull the lever. Of course, I would.

neidu3@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 89d

Yup. The people who told me the lever doesn't work might be lying or wrong. Doing anything is better than doing nothing.

Life 💀

Foxfire@pawb.social · 8 pts · 89d

Hey, the people tied to the tracks might not know that. If I frantically pull it, at least their final moments show someone trying to save them instead of indifference, even if it's futile.

Janx@piefed.social · 7 pts · 89d (1 reply)

Of course, levers are fun!

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 88d

Pastor says if I pull the lever enough I'll go blind

Grass@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 88d

you are told the lever does nothing and not to pull it. Do you pull the lever?

*pulls lever

The lever speeds up the trolley.

minorkeys@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 89d

Yes, the illusion of control comes through useless action. If that's all I got, then so be it.

Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 89d

Presumably the lever is controlling the real trolley problem being run next door.

P1k1e@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 89d

Yes, in futility

Fleur_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 88d (1 reply)

As per my usual answer to these trolly "problems," I jump in front of the trolley before comprehending the situation

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 88d

Hey no fair, trolley suicide is my answer too

caseyweederman@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 88d

Okay now somebody do a Monty Hall/Trolley Problem.

BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 88d

OK, here is one. The trolley is on a hill. Attached to an indestructible cable. Pulling the lever will cause the cable to pull it back up the hill. This takes 30 minutes, then the lever will need to be pulled again. You can call for help, but will take 3 days for them to get there. If you leave, no one will know you were there. What do you do?

solidheron@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 88d

I remember a variant saying pulling the lever does nothing, all you can do is watch.

Yes because it's the only freedom I have left
