Back when I drank more regularly, a French GSM or a Spanish Rioja were always appreciated. Fruity but less sweet, sometimes black peppery, stuff that pairs well with grilled red meat type dishes.
Nowadays I don't drink very much and still have a reasonable pile of wine I never touch since I don't like how alcohol reacts to the main medicine I take, a small glass (or more commly, about 2 nice sips worth) of port or an ice wine really hit the spot.

A nice Burgundy from Côte de Beaune. Aloxe-Corton or Pommard.

How much sugar is in it?

Pinots usually have pretty low residual sugar (under 5g/L)
