The second a smoke alarm starts the low battery beeping in my house, I’m wide awake. I don’t know how someone can sleep through it.

A few nights ago, mine started beeping in the middle of my sleep and I swear I heard a bunch of really fast beeps right before I woke up and I was like *wtf was that", and 5 seconds later a single beep and I was like "oh".

On US Navy ships, one of the first indications of a casualty is that ventilation stops, either via loss of electrical power or on purpose to prevent the spread of smoke. I now have an acute response when any fans suddenly turn off.

why are you giving me more nightmares? :’)

yokonzo@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 2y

I'm pretty sure this is a thing, I sleep with a fan so my girlfriend does too, I often get up a lot in the middle of the night and she hardly wakes, and we even sleep with the TV on sometimes though i don't like it. One time though I accidentally unplugged the fan and our white noise was gone and she shot straight up super startled like I had set off fireworks

For me it's the cat scratching the carpet. I'm either just in time or too late.

fatalError@lemmy.sdf.org · 8 pts · 2y

Put some pieces of soft wood like fir around your place, cats like sharpening their claws on it and it will likely save your carpets and furniture.

I once slept through an earthquake, but the fan stopping will wake me up every time.

ColdWater@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 2y (5 replies)

LOL I have a fan that automatically stop if it run for too long, I have it for 1.5 years to this day I still don't know why

Sheeple@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 2y (1 reply)

It's because of south Korean superstition. They believe that a running fan can kill you so fans produce at/for south Korea, shut automatically down.

It's a weird phobia they have as w culture

ColdWater@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

No it's a small Konfulon fan (FS-06)made in China

supercriticalcheese@feddit.it · 1 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Maybe it's to prevent overheating

orphiebaby@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

But that's what fans are for

supercriticalcheese@feddit.it · 1 pts · 2y

Maybe the fan motor needs it's own fan

provomeister@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Lately, I've been really into self hosting. My first thought was server fan, not air conditioning haha🫠

There is nothing like the sound of 2 dozen HDDs unexpectedly spinning down.

Take this meme, make it opposite day, and that's me.

Me

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2y

Almost me, except I had to get up and check the window, when it sounded like my cat clawing at it. It wasn't my cat. It was a middle aged woman who was cutting my bedroom screen open. After opening my curtains she ran away, so nothing happened. But I had to get my screen fixed. And I was scared to sleep in my bedroom for a month, and with lights on.

GitProphet@lemmy.sdfeu.org · 2 pts · 2y

ijeff@lemdro.id · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

There's an opportunity here somewhere for AC/fan/heaters with alarm integration 🤔.

CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y

Time to set up Home Assistant that way 🤔

neurospicygraphict@kbin.social · 1 pts · 2y

Smart plug. No integration necessary
