Not too surprising. Russia has been consuming the leftovers of the Soviet Union, mostly built by the client states, to hang on to a semblance of power.

They're down to the last dregs, running out of tanks, they've already run out of old guns and replacement artillery tubes. For the last years they've been moving away from their incredibly artillery heavy doctrine to light Infantry assaults.

The stockpiles are spent, and what we are seeing now is what Russia can really do, without the not-so-endless reserves of the Soviet Union.
