They were screening them for agricultural products. With screw worm making its way into Texas and they’re coming from Mexico I’m not actually upset about this. There’s plenty of other CBP bullshit to actually be upset about.
I've travelled to multiple islands that require ag checks on entry. Never has there been a dog sniffing for anything other than maybe a bomb dog in the airport. The process involves putting your luggage on a special scanner that looks like the x-ray scanners at TSA. No military presence, animals, or perp lineup.
They did this to expedite their process through customs because they were delayed by their charter jet company, or possibly FIFA, messing up their customs paperwork. This sniffer dog is faster than having them wait in line for the xray.
I can share videos of the French and German teams going through non expedited screening on the tarmac if you’d like, this wasn’t the administration targeting Uruguay.
Not saying you wrong, but what in that picture tells you it's an ag inspection, or is there other context elsewhere that explains this?
I wouldn't put it past this administration at all to specifically target a Hispanic country or other countries in the middle east. Hell, they blocked a ref from Africa at the border for unspecified reasons, so there possible precedent for targeting demographics.
Edit: you can disregard. I did some outside reading and it looks like the whole process was expedited by joint forces. Reports are that the dog was for ag although I didn't dig in further for concrete evidence. All in all though, it doesn't appear to be a malicious check, but the outcry makes sense given context with this admin. They don't get the benefit of the doubt because of who they are.
I don't blame anybody for assuming malice as it’s standard operating procedure for this admin, it just so happens that this is the once in a blue moon instance where there’s an innocent explanation. Now, how the Iranian team is being treated is a whole different situation; they are absolutely being needlessly persecuted by the administration for political purposes.
This comment has some, "she shouldn't have been wearing that in this part of town" vibes. Yea, they could have not come to the pinnacle achievement of their lives, but the story is about the fascist state, not the players themselves, they're just the victims in it.

They did have a loud support in their match against NZ. I'm sure they'd have liked the win, but they looked good in the draw.
