Is the G7 or G8 summits named for the countries that attend? So one day we could have a G143 summit? Or am I missing something why numbers go up or down?

Not exactly, it's a group of 7 or 8 of the biggest countries and they have meetings. Like a smaller UN. Doesn't mean they always agree or actually accomplish anything.

Yeah that's it. It became G8 when Russia joined, and G7 when Russia was expelled.
