This is a well written piece.

Case by case, there may be good reasons for teams to work together in person. As a general rule, though, it turns out that ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities. They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshiped at the office altar.

TL;DR: it's about swinging their dick around.

This article tracks. I lose at least half a day of productivity on the 2 days / week I’m required to be in office. That commute time is spent in early meetings with colleagues in different time zones. I won’t attend meetings from my car or the train. New boss said don’t come in unless you want to or there’s a team event. We are going to get along methinks.
