Today one of the kids asked me about a good keyboard alternative for iOS because they want to have custom graphics. And they also complain about the thing overheating all the time.
And that opened a window to have the conversation about open source vs big tech, privacy, data mining, proper ram usage, …the whole thing.
Haven’t particularly dived into this topic so I’m looking for a good opensource keyboard that has some graphical options and isn’t hogging all the memory or sending all the keystrokes to weird and evil people. Any suggestions?

Instead of using a custom keyboard you can just add keyboards like GIF Keyboard, but never actually open them. Instead you click the plus button and choose GIF Keyboard when you want to add a GIF, no need to use a custom keyboard.
This probably works with a lot of things

I just go to Tenor’s website on the web, search for the gif I want, and copy and paste it. I found the keyboard switching UI too clunky.

I know this isn't any help, but I've been looking for the same thing for years. Back in the day, Fleksy used to be good but now it's pretty much dead, and I think bought out by some big company or something. I even liked Swiftkey before Microsoft ruined it. One I really liked was Typewise, but even that hasn't been updated in over a year. Sadly I don't think any good options exist on iOS anymore. Hopefully someone can prove me wrong 🤞
