Adorable brood of Killdeer

Great Lakes region, USA. June 2026.

I was getting out of my car at an Aldi and heard the distinct call of the killdeer across the street. I happened to see an adult killdeer chilling by a manmade pond and luckily had my camera handy. I walked over and noticed it had a brood of three chicks. I didn't want to get too close and disturb them as this was all next to a highway with a lot of traffic.

Man, you really see how effective their camouflage is in the first pic. It took me forever to spot them all.

Very hard to spot. I had to look closer to see the second one. Actually I came to comment they are hard to see.

Edit: 3 not 2,just found third one 🤣

I agree. I was only expecting to see the adult until I got close and they started moving. I didn't want to startle them too much so I backed off.
