Why Am I Dreading Taylor Swift’s Wedding?

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/02/opinion/taylor-swift-wedding-msg.html

It certainly looks like Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star on planet Earth, is going to marry Travis Kelce, her three-time Super Bowl champion beau, at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

While neither Ms. Swift nor Mr. Kelce has directly confirmed that their nuptials will take place there, over the past week, my imagination has been reeling with the potential for matrimonial stagecraft that only Ms. Swift could pull off. How many dresses will she wear, and what will they look like? Will Jack Antonoff be a bridesman? Will she perform? Who else will get up onstage? Paul McCartney? James Taylor? MGMT?

And yet, as I consider the expected event, I feel … well … “depressed” is the word.

I am wondering if she is going to take his last name. After all, her entire career is built on being Taylor Swift.

Her being Taylor anything else would just seem strange as hell

Quite frankly, I think he ought to take her last name because she is a global icon and he is relatively unknown by comparison.

Swift is also a particularly good name for the back of a sports jersey. I agree he should take hers.

I am holding out hope that MSG is a head fake and she has a much more romantic venue planned.

I'm with you, I haven't felt excited at all. Which, I shouldn't need to feel anything, but as a siftie it's odd to me. Its weird, I would respect her privacy if she wanted a small intimate ceremony, but then renting out msg is insane. Like ultimate privacy but you're renting out one of the most well known venues on the planet, begging for spectacle? I just don't understand it, it seems to be that she wants both things at once.
